ZoCenter Q&A

Q&A - Questions and Answers
Q: Do you offer classes?
Yes. The dojo does not formally hold classes, but we do have authorized instructors. We currently offer children's, women's, and adult MMA classes with emphasis on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai Boxing, & general self-defense. We plan on adding more classes. Please stand by..
Q: Do I have to sign up for classes?
No. Taking formal classes are not mandatory. In fact, the main thrust of the club is peer to peer training and learning. Taking a formal class from an instructor and in a discipline you wish to fast track and learn is optional. If you're a complete beginner, we do recommend taking a introductory martial arts/boxing class where you can learn basic kicking and punching techniques. (intro classs is pending, or someone in the dojo can show you).
Q: How much will the classes cost?
That's up to the instructor and the discipline he/she will be teaching. Our nightly MMA classes cost approximately $120/ month. Other classes and workshops will vary.
Q: Will you offer private classes or one on one training?
Various authorized instructors will offer private one on one training. For a reference, contact us about what you wish to learn or the goal you'd like to reach, and we'll recommend an instructor for you at the dojo.
Q: Can I come see the dojo?
Certainly. Make an appointment with us, and we'll show you around.
Q: When will the club open?
The club is open now. The dojo was established around April 2009.
Q: What do I wear to the school?
Something loose and comfortable. We don't have any formal uniform, but we expect you to present yourself well and be socially responsible.
Q: Will you offer weight and cardio equipment?
Yes. We will have a modest amount of free weights, smith machines, bench, elliptical and treadmill. Don't compare us to the big box clubs, that's not what we're about. We hope we can satisfy 95% of your needs.
Q: Is this a traditional martial arts school?
No. Not really. This club was designed based on my personal need to stay fit, learn martial arts, and never get bored. I got tired going to the big box gyms, doing routine exercises that felt more like a chore. Besides, everyone at the gym looked bored out of their minds. I wanted to stay fit that served a purpose. What better than learning self-defense and martial arts. But I didn't want to join a traditional classical school. I was too old for that. And I didn't have the patience to follow their regimented training methods. I wanted to learn at my own pace. Why not try to gather like minded people like myself and learn off of them? Perfect idea, peer to peer training! There's got to be people out there with some skills in various arts who's willing to share and learn at the same time. This is how Zo Center is different. This is the core philosophy.
Q: Is this another MMA gym?
Again, no. We're not just about jiu-jitsu, ground fighting, kicking and punching and knocking the snots out of your opponent. We touch on that aspect as well, but that's not the core philosophy of the gym. Our aim is not to teach you how to fight, but to teach you how to live. In fact, that's what we hope you'll do, ie. teach and share what you know with your fellow members. We don't limit our training to just MMA. Because we don't limit ourselves to just the physical aspect of fighting. We at the Zo Center believe that martial arts happens to be a very good vehicle for learning self-discipline, staying fit, and developing your personal self awareness. Our main goal is health and fitness, not fighting. Learning how to fight, just happens to be a by product of our training. But then again, that's up to you.
Q: I'm under 18, can I still join?
Yes. You can apply after getting parent's permission. Make your parents fully aware of our format. This is not about "supervised" training (unless you enroll in one of our instructional classes). It's more like a self-directed dojo which emphasizes personal and peer to peer training.
Q: What type of members is the dojo admitting?
Responsible, respectful, considerate, clean, eager to learn and share what they know. With or without a martial arts/fitness background. Health conscious, open minded.
Q: What are the dojang hours of operation?
We don't have any formal hours set yet. You can come and go as you please. Members only, of course.
Q: What is a club, dojo, or dojang?
These words are all in reference to the Zo Training Center. They all mean "workout or fitness center or hall". Hanja or Kanji (Chinese), Dojo (Japanese) and Dojang (Korean) meaning training room.
Q: How do I join Zo Center?

Ask yourself what your personal goals are and then find a school that best meets your objective.
